On 3/14/2026 after working at Bacon’s Acres for 3 weeks, Kristin asked Timothy to type up some Lessons Learned. Here’s what he had to share:
Ten lessons learned from my mushing experience:
1. The team can stop abruptly so I need to keep my attention on what is happening
in front of me.
2. Be aware of where my equipment is. Don’t assume my equipment (like the snow
hook) is where I want it, always be sure.
3. When it’s time to go, we go. Have what you need and be prepared to move when
the hook comes out.
4. Beware of turns and embankments, sled can tip easily if you don’t manage the
balance.
5. Mind traffic out on trail. I may find other teams or snow machines out there.
6. Dress appropriately, while I did the best with what I had it was very apparent to
me that even a short run can get very cold very fast.
7. Check your girls every run, know what it looks like when they are in heat.
8. Dogs slow down when they poop, make sure the team slows down with them.
9. Having dogs drink from separate bowls at the end of a run reinforces good
behavior during races.
10. Communicate with your team on trail, let leaders know when they are done after
a run.
